Fanwood Presbyterian Church

| The year was 1929, and a group of about 65 people began worshipping in a building known as School Four — now Children’s Specialized Hospital on LaGrande Avenue in Fanwood. For its first two years, the group was non-denominational, but it had Presbyterian leanings. This led to its being received by Elizabeth Presbytery in 1932. Two years later, the cornerstone for the original church was laid on Marion Avenue. The original Fanwood Presbyterian Church was built and furnished for a little more than $10,000. This original church building now serves as the Westminster Dining Hall. |  |

By 1937, 220 communicants regularly worshiped in the borough’s first church, and 250 children attended Sunday School. In 1939, the church began its relationship with Boy Scout Troop 33, which continues meeting every Monday in what is now Westminster Hall in the education building. As the church membership continued to grow (to 682, with 425 in Sunday School), so did the need for more space. A second cornerstone was laid in 1949, this time for a separate 2-story brick building with an auditorium and stage on the second floor and Sunday School rooms and a nursery taking up the entire ground floor. |
