History of Fanwood Presbyterian Church

​​1929    Initial meeting held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hilbe, with Rev. William McKinney, pastor of Presbyterian Church of Westfield. First worship service and Sunday school of Fanwood Union Gospel Service held at School No. 4. ​

1931    Congregation votes to seek affiliation with the Presbyterian Church, USA     ​

1933    Cornerstone for the first church building is laid on property donated by Mr. Stephen Schwartz, a member of Temple Sholom and a property developer in Plainfield; Rev. Duncan S. Cameron, previously retired, was assigned by the Elizabeth Presbytery as stated supply pastor 

1939    Rev. David Baker, a recent graduate of Princeton Seminary, becomes the church’s first installed pastor; first Boy Scout Troop organized

1942    First Vacation Bible School held; Fanwood Defense Council granted the facilities as an WWII emergency hospital and communication center for the south side of town

1946    Rev. Baker resigns to attend the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and train as a medical missionary

1947    Rev. Noel A. Calhoun, Jr., a former military chaplain, is installed as pastor

1949    A chapel and education building is added; the church has 682 members and 425 in church school

1950    The church partners with the Rev. and Mrs. Rendall A. Davis for missionary ministry in Japan

1952    The Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Presbyterian Church USA is held in Madison Square Garden. Fanwood chartered two buses for members to attend – but because of the huge crowds, they missed the program!

1953    Members of the church collaborate to establish Willow Grove Presbyterian Church; Rev. Calhoun resigns and church calls the Rev. Harold A. Scott as pastor; Fanwood welcomes it's 1,000th member

1955    Fanfare news bulletin is first published by Martha Scott, the pastor’s daughter; Gloria Massa establishes music and choir ministries

1957    Fanwood Presbyterian Cooperative Nursery School is organized

1958    First services held in the new expanded sanctuary building; first Spanish-speaking church partnership with Iglesia Evangelica Hispana; Mrs. F.O. Bond-Nelson becomes the church’s first female elder

1960    First missionary partnership with Church World Service

1962    George Laird Hunt, D.D. succeeds Rev. Scott as pastor; Dr. Hunt also serves as the executive secretary for the Consultation on Church Union (COCU), a foundational organization for the worldwide ecumenical movement - and the church's work room became the COCU Room!

1963    Fireside Fellowship begin meeting with Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church; commitment to the new ecumenical movement grows 

1968    Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is held with community churches; commitment to ecumenism, servanthood and inclusivity continues to grow

1969    Lowell Ballinger becomes the first “child of the congregation” to become an ordained minister

 

1970    Fanwood Thrift Shop organized with donated items from the congregation to raise funds for ministries in our community

1971    First food bank ministry established to support the hungry in Fanwood, Scotch Plains and Plainfield

1995    Westminster Preschool is established

2003    Continuing the historical connection that provided the land for Fanwood Church, Temple Sholom in Plainfield moves into the church building and shares office and worship space as this Jewish congregation seeks a permanent home  

2009    80th Anniversary Celebration held with new pastor, Rev. David Jahnke
