Bible Study

The Fanwood Church Bible Study typically meets in person at 1 PM on Tuesdays in the Coleville Room in the sanctuary building.

Additionally, this year we are experimenting with Amplify Media, a new online platform that makes biblical resources available at any time. To participate, contact Pastor Stacy or visit Amplify Media and enter the church code XCWMBP to get started.

Please rest assured that purchasing books or watching recommended videos is not a prerequisite for active participation in Bible Study. We welcome everyone to the discussion, even if you missed the "homework!"

FALL BIBLE STUDY

"Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi" by Amy-Jill Levine

In Short Stories by Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine analyzes the “problems with parables,” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.

NOTE: This is a wonderful book but it can be a difficult read. We are recommending participants purchase the "Participant Book" which was specially created for congregational use, but you are welcome to enjoy the longer book as well.

ADVENT BIBLE STUDY

"Light of the World: A Beginners's Guide to Advent" by Amy-Jill Levine

In Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus. These stories open conversations around connections of the Gospel stories to the Old Testament, the role of women in first-century Jewish culture, the importance of Mary’s visitation and the revolutionary implications of Mary’s Magnificat, the census and the stable, and the star of Bethlehem and the flight to Egypt.

This study will start on Monday, December 1, 2025 and is currently scheduled to meet online at 7 PM on Monday evenings.
